Step 1 — Easy Pace
Start the PPT test at an easy pace. For more seasoned runners, start the test about 1 minute per mile slower than estimated 5k pace. At the end of each stage record heart rate (highest number at end), time for interval, and blood lactate value.
Step 2
Run each interval about 10–15 seconds faster than the previous stage. Collect the lactate sample as quickly as possible after the completion of the interval.
Step 3
Continue to progress the stages down by 10–15 seconds. Record Heart Rate, Time, and Lactate for each stage.
Step 4
Check on progress to be sure that athlete can continue to complete additional stages 10–15 seconds faster.
Step 5
Continue to progress increasing pace 10–15 seconds per interval.
Step 6 — Maximum Effort
Finish the test with a maximum effort pace.
